[Today’s Japanese word “Noren”]

I think that "Noren" for "sunshade" feels to be very Japan.

Today’s Japanese word is “Noren” (shop curtain).

“Noren” is cloth, it is to hang in the border of at the eaves or the storefront of the store or the room. The purpose of hanged “Noren” is for sunshade and blindfolds.

In “Onsen” (hot springs) or “Sentou” (public baths), there is a hanged “Yu-Noren”. A character of “Yu” is written in it. This indicates that it is “the entrance for bathing facilities”.

At the entrance for ladies’ bath, there is a hanging “Noren”. A character of “Onna-yu” (hot spring for women) is written in it. Or only character of “Yu” is written on a red cloth.

At the entrance for mens’ bath, there is a hanging “Noren”. A character of “Otoko-yu” (hot spring for men). is written in it. Or only character of “Yu” is written on a black or Navy blue cloth.

Well, “Noren” is very close to business.
This will be introduced next time.
