”Fuyu-gakoi” is made to protect large flowers.

Today’s Japanese word is “Fuyu-gakoi” (Winter enclosure).

“Fuyu-gakoi” is to surround garden trees with such as straw in winter. It is the scene seen a lot in snow cold area.
“Snow hanging” to be carried out in “Kenroku-en” Garden at Kanazawa are one of the “fuyu-gakoi”. This is very beautiful and famous.

“Fuyu-gakoi” has been mainly done for the following purposes.

• Protect trees from the weight of snow.
• Protect trees from cold.
• Enjoy the landscape in winter.

Especially evergreens such as pine trees beautifully hang to enjoy the winter landscape. So “Snow hanging” is also told as great master’s work.

Well, you can watch “fuyu-gakoi” at the “Toshogu” peony garden in Ueno, Tokyo.
It is because “Kan-botan” and “Fuyu-botan” (there are one of the kind of winter peony) are full bloom in winter. It is made to protect large flowers.
