How to count a number in Japanese

I’ll study a Japanese number today!
This time is “How to count numbers”.
In Japan, you can read numbers in two patterns.

Here we go! lesson!

At first, general way of counting.
1= ichi
2= ni
3= san
4= shi
5= go
6= roku
7= shichi
8= hachi
9= kyuu
10= jyuu.

This reading way is called “Kango”. It is said the origin is from “kanji”.
We use it very often. For example, calculation , or reading calendar and time, etc…

The next, sometime use way of counting.
1= hito
2= fu
3= mi
4= yo
5= itu
6= mu
7= nana
8= ya
9= koko
10= to-o

This reading way is called “Wago”. It is said the origin is old Japanese.
It is not used for calculation. However, we often use it when counting numbers.
When we use the “Wago” pattern, we will use the unique “Japanese counter word” after the “Wago”.

The unique “Japanese counter word” will be introduced next week.
