[ Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival @Yonezawa/Yamagata ]

Yonezawa City locates southern of Yamagata prefecture in Japan. It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen to get there.

Yonezawa has a long history. There are many historical buildings and places in the City.
As one of those places, “Uesugi Shrine” is a good sightseeing place in Yonezawa. The shrine was built to honor “Kenshin Uesugi”, who is one of greatest and bravest warriors in the age of Civil Wars, about 300 years ago.

“Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival” is held on February every year. At the festival, you can enjoy seeing very beautiful views of about 300 snow lanterns and 3000 snow lamps.
Although it depends on years, if there is enough snow, you can see many big statues made by snow. You can also taste many local foods including famous and delicious Yonezawa beef in a lot of food wagons.
You can enjoy the festival in day time, however, I strongly recommend you go there at night.

Yonezawa is also famous for LED. (It means Light Emitting Diode.) So you can find not only snow lamps but also pretty and bright LED decorations on the snow too.

It may be very cold to visit there at night, so please wear warm clothes when you would like to go. If you would like to experience “Real Winter” in Yamagata, “Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival” is the best place to visit!
