[“Owakudani” / Hakone, Kanagawa]

the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji from ropeway.

Owakudani is a volcano mouth located in Hakone, Kanagawa. Hakone is a popular hot spring area included in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Although entering around Owakudani crater was restricted due to volcanic activity, the regulation was canceled in July 2016 except for some districts.

You can see the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, from here.

The famous souvenir here is the boiled eggs called “Kuro-tamago” (black egg). It is said that if you eat one egg, life expectancy will be extended by 7 years! The surface of egg is colored black due to the influence of volcanic gas. You can buy it at a nearby souvenir shop and eat it on the spot.

In addition, there are two museums (“Hakone Geopark” and “Owakudani Kurotamago-kan”), and some restaurants such as Gokuraku-jyaya, so it can be used as the resting place for drivers.
However, we recommend to use public transport, such as bus or ropeway, especially on holidays. Because the parking spaces capacity is limited.
From Shinjuku, you are able to experience getting on train, cable car and ropeway.
